Gaming Floor
We spent a couple of weeks putting Elbow River Casino through its paces, dropping in at different hours and moving around the floor. The property sits at 218 18 Avenue SE in Calgary, right off Macleod Trail near the Stampede grounds. Getting here is straightforward: drive in or hop off the CTrain at Victoria Park station and walk over.
The gaming floor covers about 80,000 square feet. For a Calgary casino, that is a serious footprint and you notice it in how open the place feels. Slots, table games and the poker room each sit in their own zones, so when things get busy on a Friday night it does not turn into one noisy knot of people.
There are more than 600 slot machines spread around the floor. Different denominations, reel styles and formats mean you are not stuck circling for a machine that suits your budget. During our visits, the slots were in solid working order, and floor staff made regular rounds, which made it easy to flag someone down when we needed help or a ruling.

Poker Room and Table Games
The poker room is arguably the main magnet here. It runs 24 hours from Thursday through Saturday, which is a big plus if you like late sessions. On Sunday through Wednesday, poker operates from 10:00 AM to 3:00 AM. Texas Hold’em is the primary format, and during our sessions the games stayed consistent, with a blend of casual players and some very seasoned regulars.
On the main floor, table games include blackjack, roulette, baccarat and craps - the standard spread for a property of this size in Alberta. Limits were not clearly posted at every table, so we did what most regulars do and asked a floor supervisor. That remains the most reliable way to know what you are sitting down to play.
As for hours, the casino generally runs from around 9:30 AM to 3:00 AM daily, with closing pushed to about 4:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. We noticed slight differences in times depending on which directory or listing we checked. If you plan to show up close to closing, a quick phone call ahead saves the hassle.
A few practical patterns stood out for us over those weeks:
- Weekday afternoons are noticeably quieter at the tables, so you get more breathing room.
- Thursday through Saturday give you the most freedom with the poker room, especially overnight.
- Free heated underground parking is available, clearly mentioned on the casino’s Facebook page.
- Entry is free and there is no membership requirement at the door.
History and Background
Before it became Elbow River Casino, the property operated under the name Silver Dollar Casino. The long-term owner, Sam Switzer, sold it to local private buyers in 2012, which marked the shift to the current brand. Today the casino runs under Alberta’s charitable gaming framework, regulated by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC). Under that model, a portion of profits flows back into community groups.
The venue was voted the best place to gamble in FFWD’s 2010 “Best of Calgary” readers poll. That kind of recognition reflects how long the casino has been part of the local entertainment scene. The Roman-themed interior is another consistent detail: columns, murals and decor that stand out next to other Alberta venues that lean more anonymous.
Location helps a lot. Being close to the Stampede grounds and the Red Mile corridor makes Elbow River an easy extra stop if you are already in the area. Victoria Park CTrain station is within walking distance, which matters if you are coming from downtown or do not want to deal with driving.
